Occupy AIPAC - March 3-6 2012.

Occupy AIPAC to Protest Netanyahu’s US Visit

… Occupy AIPAC, which calls for a new American foreign policy in the Middle East, Thursday kicked off a week of actions to protest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the Unites States and his push for war on Iran …

Occupy AIPAC will urge Obama to reject the Israeli push for war on Iran and insist on respect for Palestinian rights.

Events and protests will also draw attention to the role of AIPAC, the most powerful pro-Israel lobby group in Washington, in influencing US policy through its stranglehold over Congress.

“After 10 years of war, the American people need a foreign policy that focuses on diplomacy, but AIPAC takes us down the dangerous path of war with Iran,” Occupy AIPAC organizer Medea Benjamin said.

“We are gathering to demand that our leaders break with AIPAC’s disastrous path of attacking Iran, as well as supporting Israel’s human rights violations and illegal settlements in the West Bank,” said Benjamin.

AIPAC and the Senate's Reckless Resolution.

… Joint Chief Martin Dempsey in a recent CNN interview referring to the Iranians as a "rational player" stating that it would not be "prudent to attack" and that the US has "not concluded that Iran is an existential threat" and further that "a strike would be destabilizing." At the January 31st Senate Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, National Security Adviser James Clapper and CIA Director David Petraeus agreed that there was no evidence of Iran's nuclear weapon capability. …

Just prior to this weekend's AIPAC Policy Conference, thirty-five Senators (20 R's and 15 Dems) introduced Senate Resolution 380 "regarding the importance of preventing the government of Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability."

Eerily similar to the 2002 Joint Congressional Resolution to authorize military force against Iraq, SR 380 reads like an unabashed pro-war tract, inflammatory and belligerent, as if eager for war …

Why Netanyahu's Visit to Discuss Iran Puts Obama in a Political Minefield

… President Barack Obama's reelection bid could face a stern test when he addresses the annual conference of the America Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC) on Sunday, and then meets with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the following day. Top of the agenda on both occasions is Iran, which has also been chosen by Republicans as the Number 1 foreign policy issue of the presidential race. And publicly aired differences in the assessment of, and strategies for dealing with, Iran's nuclear program have become a source of friction between the Administration and the Israelis. Netanyahu's leverage in the debate is boosted not only by Israel's threat to take unilateral military action if it deems Washington's efforts to restrain Iran insufficient, but also by Obama's need to remain onside with the flagship Israel lobbying organization -- which tends to take its cue from the Israel …

Netanyahu Invokes Holocaust and Threats to Americans in Iran AIPAC Speech.

…. BLUMENTHAL: Well, Netanyahu's a liar. He's always been a liar. The problem is American opinion is about the same as it was before Iraq, which is, overwhelmed by idiocy. Over 50 percent of the American public, according to a Pew poll, say that they haven't heard enough-actually, far over 50 percent says that they haven't heard enough about the dispute over Iran's nuclear program. The same time, over 50 percent of Americans favor a military strike on Iran. So there's a connection between ignorance and belligerence here, and Netanyahu is catering to that.

There's only one country in the Middle East that invades its neighbors, that, you know, is in a permanent state of war, and that routinely launches missile strikes at its neighbors, and it's Netanyahu. And he's trying to completely invert the reality …

So he's distorting and warping history, exploiting Jewish fears to create a case for war. And this is what I think the most destructive effect of his speech is is the effect on Jewish opinion in the United States. ...

… The real danger of Netanyahu's bellicose agenda lies in its potential to trigger an unmanageable situation in the region -- a situation that will surely be as bloody as it will be unnecessary. If the irrationality of his argument for war is reflected in his conduct of one, the region can expect only more misery.

AIPAC is very dangerous to the world and it’s especially dangerous for Americans... Currently, it’s trying to push the U.S. into an outright attack on Iran or enabling an attack on Iran by Israel...

AIPAC is “a special interest lobby” in the United States, which is working on behalf of a foreign country -- Israel -- and not on behalf of Americans, or on behalf of peace or justice …

“The US media is consistently, extremely Israel-centric in their reports, so they leave out a great deal of information that Americans need to know to have rational successful policies, which results in the ignorance of the American public about the Israeli lobby,” …

AIPAC is the one of the most powerful lobbies in the United States. It works to influence US foreign and domestic policy for the interest of Israel. …
